SOU splits final day of Summer Slam

FULLERTON, Calif. Andressa Ribeiro Soares had 14 kills, Lanie Snow assisted four blocks, and Southern Oregon salvaged a tournament-ending win at the Hope International Summer Slam against the host on Saturday night at Darling Pavilion.

The No. 6-ranked Raiders started Day 2 with a third consecutive NAIA Top 25 opponent, losing 25-14, 25-14, 25-22 against No. 23 The Master's (Calif.). They ended a four-match skid against HIU by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-18 in their final non-conference tuneup.

The Master's, which went 4-0 on the weekend, rode the big arms of outside hitters Isabella Amet and Macy Gebhards, who delivered 14 kills each. They did their damage on 40 combined swings, lifting the Mustangs' team attacking average to .415.

Ribeiro Soares, Friley Curtiss and Maya Watters each had seven kills in that match, which came less than 24 hours after the Raiders played back-to-back against No. 2 Bellevue (Neb.) and No. 14 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio).

Ribeiro Soares' performance helped them bounce back against HIU (2-2). Her 14 kills were accumulated on just 20 attempts, and she and Tais Vegas led the match with six digs each.

Annie Hite pitched in 10 assists and four service aces. Vega added three aces, and SOU finished with 11 as a team compared to two errors.

The Raiders will have 12 days off before starting Cascade Conference play Sept. 5 at Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). They're home next on Sept. 12-13 for matches against No. 5 Eastern Oregon and No. 18 College of Idaho.
