SOU surges past Oregon Tech

ASHLAND – Career-high outputs from Friley Curtiss and Tais Vega sparked the Southern Oregon University volleyball team as it recovered from a first-set loss to claim a 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 decision against Oregon Tech on Tuesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Curtiss, a sophomore right-side hitter, established a new best with 16 kills, pouring in five in an equalizing second set and five more with a block in the clincher. Vega, a senior libero, did so with 19 digs and four service aces as SOU stymied the Owls to the tune of a .099 attacking average.

The No. 19-ranked Raiders, a few days removed from an upset of No. 10 College of Idaho, bumped their record to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Cascade Conference. The Owls dropped to 6-6 and 0-5.

The win was the Raiders' fifth consecutive against their rivals.

Andressa Ribeiro Soares also helped them get it with 14 kills, 12 digs, two aces and two assisted blocks, marking her fourth double-double in five CCC matches.

The defense from her, Vega and middles Bella Cormack (5 blocks) and Tessa Zimmermann (4 blocks) slowed down an Owls attack that converted at a .242 clip in the first set. They accumulated just 23 kills compared to 18 attacking errors the rest of the way.

OIT nearly stole the swing set, however, erasing a 23-17 deficit in the third to tie it at 24-24 on a joint block by Tiffini Goss and Alexa Gugliotta. Ribeiro Soares responded with back-to-back kills to give the Raiders a 2-1 sets lead, and they never looked back after surging to a 7-2 lead in the fourth.

They got more stellar work from setters Mia Jaeger (28 assists, 6 digs) and Annie Hite (24 assists, 7 digs), who conducted a .194 attack. Zimmermann needed just 15 attempts to total nine kills, and Ane Tuinauvai contributed 13 kills on 35 swings in three sets of action.

Willow Jacobson recorded a team-high eight kills with four blocks for OIT. Aleksen Thayer assisted seven of the squad's 12 blocks.

Both teams visit Warner Pacific later this week, SOU on Thursday and OIT on Saturday. The Raiders return home to face Bushnell on Sept. 26 and No. 4 Corban on Sept. 27.
