ASHLAND –
Frida Vargas became the fifth player in Southern Oregon women's soccer history to assist three goals in a game, setting up every score in the Raiders' 3-1 victory against Evergreen (Wash.) on Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field.
SOU went ahead less than 15 minutes into the Cascade Conference opener when Vargas sent a corner kick to the far post for a
Brooklyn Hayes header. She later helped
Emily Hyde and
Tori Lasch get on the board.
The Raiders improved to 4-1-0 overall, marking their best start through five games since 2012. The Geoducks remained winless at 0-4-0.
Vargas, the All-CCC junior midfielder from Anchorage, Alaska, moved up to No. 6 on the program's career assists list by bringing her total to 11. In the 25th minute, she passed through the middle of the Geoduck defense and led Hyde into a straight on, 13-yard strike that flew underneath the crossbar.
Izzy Widener halved Evergreen's deficit with a goal in the 51st minute, but Lasch made brought the advantage back to two goals in the 79th after Vargas poked the ball away from a Geoduck to give the freshman a 12-yard, left-footed shot from the right side that she bounced inside the far post.
Both Hayes and Lasch are up to two goals on the season. Hyde's was her first.
Widener's goal, an impressive 30-yard shot assisted by Emma Stock, was the first of the season for any Geoduck. The Raider defense limited them to just one other on-target shot.
At 10 a.m. Sunday against Northwest (Wash.), the Raiders will attempt to register their first six-point CCC-opening weekend in seven years. The Eagles lost Friday at Oregon Tech, 2-1.
