Raiders stay hot with 3-1 win over NU

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon extended its unbeaten streak to eight games, matching the longest of the season-opening sort in team history, with a testy 3-1 defeat of Northwest (Wash.) on Sunday afternoon at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field.

The Raiders were level going into halftime for the second outing in a row before Harry Cullen tallied the game-winning goal in the 55th minute and assisted Irwin Leon's seventh of the season in the 63rd. They upped their record to 7-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Cascade Conference, starting CCC play with a six-point weekend for the fifth time in six years.

The Eagles (3-3-1, 0-2-0) fell behind in the fifth minute as Daniel Palomino served a cross into the box for a streaking Jonathan Colunga, who headed in the first goal of his SOU career. They equalized in the 38th, when Logan Anderson rebounded Max Kozorezov's deflected shot and tapped it across the line.

Cullen's straight-on game-winner, which skidded inside the left post from the top of the box, was assisted by Leon Junker. He later hit the crossbar with a strike, but Leon was there to head it home with no one in front of him.

Leon's goal was the sixth in his last four outings and gave him goal involvements in six of his last seven games. Minutes later, however, he was sent off with a controversial second yellow card.

If the yellow is not rescinded, Leon will miss SOU's next game at 2:30 p.m. Friday against rival Oregon Tech in Ashland.

The teams were booked for nine total yellow cards, eight of which were whistled after the first half.

The Raiders had a 15-9 advantage in total shots. Keeper Casey Ruvolo collected three saves and kept the Eagles from cutting into their deficit with four minutes left by denying Matthew Ludlow's penalty kick.

SOU has yet to surrender multiple goals in a game this season.
