WOMEN'S NOTES
The Matchup: A result on Friday would give Southern Oregon (4-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 Cascade Conference) its best start through seven games in team history, but the Raiders have a lot of work to do against a team that looks like one of the circuit's best. Oregon Tech (6-1-1, 2-0-0) was one of three squads to start CCC play with a six-point weekend, and the only loss on the Owls' record came against No. 12-ranked Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). They lost five all-stars from last year's second-place roster but were picked to finish second again anyway, and to this point they've outscored opponents 19-8 combined. SOU – which has played six of the same teams OIT has faced – has outscored its opponents 14-5.
Last Week in Review: The Raiders banked four points during the opening week of conference play, first winning 3-1 against Evergreen (Wash.) on Friday as
Frida Vargas became the fifth player in team history to record three assists in a game. Vargas set up goals by
Brooklyn Hayes,
Emily Hyde and
Tori Lasch, bringing her team-high point total to eight (2 goals, 4 assists). In Sunday's 1-1 draw with Northwest (Wash.), the Raiders trailed for 77 minutes before
Kaylah Bresee converted a penalty kick in the 83rd to level the score.
Series History: SOU is 24-12-4 all-time against OIT, but the Owls have had the upper hand of late. They won last year's matchup in Klamath Falls, 3-1, and are 4-2-1 against the Raiders since the start of the decade.
MEN'S NOTES
The Matchup: Four Cascade Conference teams remain unbeaten and two of them will face off Friday at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field in a rivalry match between Southern Oregon (7-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 CCC) and Oregon Tech (4-0-3, 2-0-0). The Raiders have matched the longest season-opening unbeaten streak in team history, extending it last weekend despite an injury that took
Ariel De Dios Cruz – who notched six goals through SOU's first five games – out of the lineup. The Raiders have outscored opponents 24-5 and accumulated 18 goals over their last four games, while the Owls have surrendered just three goals and 16 shots on goal to this point. They were picked to finish seventh in the CCC preseason poll – the same spot they ended up in last year – but returned four defensive starters, including All-CCC performer Cooper Hunt.
Last Week in Review: Irwin Leon's hat trick, achieved between the 52nd and 64th minutes to break open a 1-1 halftime tie, gave the Raiders a 4-1 win against Evergreen (Wash.) last Friday. They followed that victory with Sunday's 3-1 defeat of Northwest (Wash.) as
Harry Cullen scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute and assisted Leon for another in the 63rd.
Daniel Palomino logged a goal and an assist on the weekend, helping SOU open at 2-0 in conference play for the fifth time in six years.
Leon Voted Player of the Week: For the third time this season, SOU produced a CCC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. This time it was
Irwin Leon, who scored four goals on just eight shots and has tallied six in his last four games, bringing his season total to seven goals. Leon also passed the 20-goal milestone for his collegiate career but was sent off with two yellow cards late in Sunday's game, meaning he'll miss the matchup against Oregon Tech.
Series History: SOU will look to dish out some payback after the Owls ended their season in 2024, 2-1 in overtime of the CCC Tournament quarterfinals. The teams tied last year's regular-season affair in Klamath Falls, 0-0, as SOU keeper denied a game-winning attempt on a one-on-one breakaway during the game's closing seconds. The Raiders are 9-2-2 in the all-time series and are 4-0 against OIT in Ashland, where the Owls have never scored a goal.
