ASHLAND – Westcliff (Calif.) became the first team to crack Southern Oregon's defense and handed the Raiders their first loss, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium's Laurel Field.
Samantha Aguila ended SOU's shutout streak at three games with precision in the 18th minute, challenging her defender with a shot from 20 yards up the sideline and wide of the left post that snuck under the crossbar. The Warriors made it 2-0 by halftime thanks to Emma Albino, who caught the Raiders off guard with a 60-yard through-ball that Isabella Bottero chased down and finished with only the keeper in front of her.
The Raiders (3-1) got one back in the 54th minute on
Tori Lasch's first career goal. The freshman's penalty kick was stopped, but she recovered the deflected ball a few feet from her mark and lined it through the keeper's hands.
Less than a minute later, however, Albino headed in Westcliff's third score on an assist that Jordyn Gather served into the box.
The Warriors – who are receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' poll, standing at No. 26 overall – improved to 3-0-1. They hadn't allowed a goal, either, until Lasch tallied.
SOU is off until its Cascade Conference opener, Sept. 19 against Evergreen (Wash.) in Ashland.
