Raiders come back again to escape Warner Pacific with win

PORTLAND – Playing for the fourth time in seven days, the trap was set for Southern Oregon at 10th-place Warner Pacific and the Raiders walked right into it before breaking free late to pull out a 67-61 win Thursday night at Perry Gymnasium.

Elijah Jackson scored nine of his 19 points in the final four minutes, helping the Raiders close the game with a 17-4 to reach the halfway point of the Cascade Conference schedule at 8-2.

SOU (11-7 overall) has trailed by five or more points during the last five minutes in four of its last six victories.

On the heels of Tuesday's one-point win over Oregon Tech, the Raiders came out flat and needed Gio Evanson's 11 first-half points to get out of an early 10-point hole and go up 33-31 by halftime. They shot just 7-of-22 after the break, going down by as many as eight points at the nine-minute mark, and the Knights (5-12, 1-8) led 57-50 before Jace Anderson's free throws triggered the closing run with 4:05 left.

Jackson hit two clutch 3-pointers, the second to get the Raiders within 59-58. They took the lead for good with 1:43 remaining on a pair of Bryce Dyer free throws and continued to tack on at the line, where they hit 11-of-12 down the stretch.

Defensively they forced four late turnovers, including two in a row in a three-point game over the final minute.

Evanson finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Brady Rice scored 10 and Anderson had six with seven rebounds off the bench.

The Raiders hit at just 37% as a team but helped themselves with 15 offensive rebounds and by limiting their turnover total to 10.

Jurrien Sparks led the Knights with 13 points. They've lost 20 consecutive games against SOU and haven't defeated the Raiders in CCC play since 2014-15.

The Raiders are off this weekend while the rest of the CCC stays busy. They're one of three two-loss teams behind one-loss Eastern Oregon and play next week at Evergreen (Wash.) and Northwest (Wash.).
