SALEM — The Southern Oregon beach volleyball team won its season opener at the Corban Invitational and handed Chaminade (Hawaii) its first loss of the season, defeating the NCAA Division II squad 4-1 on Friday at the Corban Beach Volleyball Courts.

The No. 4-ranked Raiders (1-0) got straight-set victories from No. 3 pair Andressa Ribeiro Soares and Maelle Garon, and No. 4 Amanda Moffat and Kaitlyn Shilling. SOU clinched the dual with a match victory from No. 5 pair Natalie Perez and Kendal Hadwick, who won in three sets.

Their No. 1 pair of Grace Gulbrandsen and Tessa Zimmermann dropped the first set 20-22, then won sets two 21-9 and three 15-8. No. 3 pair Kira Sandoval and Molly Grace forced a third set before falling 15-10.

"It was great for us to play good competition and see where we need to improve," SOU coach Paul Elliott said. "We showed resilience, as we had to get up at 4:00 a.m. and be on a bus for four hours before playing today."

The Silverswords dropped to 4-1 on the season.

The Raiders stay in Salem for a Saturday matchup against Sacramento State at 11 a.m.
