EUGENE – More productive defensive chaos and
Jenika Zurita's hot hand off the bench kept Southern Oregon tied for first place in the Cascade Conference with a 64-43 win over Bushnell on Friday evening at the Morse Center.
Winners of six straight, the Raiders (17-6 overall, 12-3 CCC) kept Bushnell (6-17, 4-11) down by forcing 26 turnovers and 32-percent shooting. They outscored the Beacons 19-7 in the fourth quarter, where Zurita knocked down her fourth and fifth 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 19 points.
The result set the stage for Saturday's critical showdown in Salem between SOU and No. 22-ranked Corban. The Raiders and Warriors are knotted with Eastern Oregon atop the standings with five regular-season games remaining, and they're just one loss ahead of three more teams whose title hopes are still very much alive.
The Raiders, now forcing more than 24 turnovers per game in conference play, turned up the pressure again behind their freshman standouts:
Sage Winslow had nine points, four assists and three steals, and
Lydia Traore put up eight points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
Zurita shot 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 beyond the arc. The junior guard got going after the Raiders fell behind 13-10 early, hitting three 3-pointers in the second quarter to give them a 29-23 halftime lead.
Over SOU's last three games, Zurita has connected on 59 percent of her 3-point tries (10-of-17). Hers was the highest-scoring effort for a Raider reserve this season.
Eliza DiGiulio was similarly efficient with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and five rebounds. She made all three of her fourth-quarter attempts.
Bushnell, led by Ayden Krupke's eight points, became the sixth Raider opponent in their last eight games to total 50 or fewer.
Like the Raiders, Corban will ride a six-game winning streak into Saturday's contest. SOU won the first matchup, 57-50, on Dec. 19 in Ashland.
