SALEM – A few considerable hurdles remain, but the Southern Oregon women's basketball team cleared another tall one in its improbable chase for a third consecutive Cascade Conference championship on Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders chopped down a Top 25 opponent for the second week in a row and completed a regular-season sweep of No. 22-ranked Corban, 71-64, to run their winning streak to seven games at the C.E. Jeffers Center.
When the streak began, the Raiders (18-6 overall, 13-3 CCC) were two games out of first place. Now, with four games left in the regular season, they're tied at the top with Eastern Oregon and one up on a pack of four teams tied for third.
The Warriors (19-5, 12-4) were also part of the first-place deadlock when the day began. They were still sitting pretty before SOU outscored them 39-26 during a second half in which they were coerced into 11 turnovers and 7-of-23 shooting.
Bridgette McIntyre, SOU's all-star senior guard, again delivered in a big spot. She put up 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals while the Raiders kept the CCC's top scorer, Corban guard Jersey Huerta, quiet with eight points and four turnovers. Huerta had averaged 20.4 in her previous 10 outings.
"This was a gritty win by our group," SOU coach
Carlotta Kloppenburg-Pruitt said. "We came out in the second half locked in on the defensive end and got it moving offensively. I'm really proud of how we finished on a tough trip."
McIntyre scored 12 during the third quarter and ended it with a step-back 3 as time ran out to give the Raiders a 57-52 edge.
Eliza DiGiulio, who had 15 points, got going early in the fourth to put them up by nine, and a
Jenika Zurita 3-pointer helped them to a 65-57 lead at the three-minute mark.
Some free-throwing yips stopped short a late Warriors run. They scored seven straight and made it 65-64 with 1:27 to go as Emilia Bishop scored inside and absorbed a foul. After her free throw for the tie rimmed off, McIntyre hit a jumper in the lane and Bishop misfired on two more attempts at the line on the other end.
McIntyre iced the win with four in a row at the line, where she has made 24 straight over the last month. She hit the 22-point mark for the fourth time in six outings.
Lydia Traore supplied 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and five rebounds, scoring 10 in the first half to keep the Raiders afloat.
Gracie Arnold stepped up with nine points off the bench, where SOU also got a pair of 3-pointers from
Taylee Clements.
The Raiders visit Oregon Tech, sitting at 12-4 in the CCC, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. They play their final home regular-season game next Saturday against Warner Pacific (5-10 CCC) before traveling to Eastern Oregon (13-3) and College of Idaho (12-4).
