Newcomers star as top-ranked SOU sweeps Westcliff

FULLERTON, Calif. – CiCi Kim, one of Southern Oregon's newest additions, showcased her middle-of-the-order pop with three doubles and five RBIs as the Raiders took back-to-back games from Westcliff (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon.

A three-run error helped SOU steal Game 1, 4-3, and Kim drove in four runs to break open a 7-1 win in Game 2. The sweep brought the Raiders to 5-1 on their season-opening trip, which concludes Monday at Biola (Calif.).

Sophomore pitcher Ayla Davies won for the third day in a row with a complete-game, nine-strikeout performance in the opener, but Westcliff catcher Sara Ellerton put the Raiders in an early hole with a two-run home run in the second inning.

The score remained 2-0 into the fourth, where Kim – a junior transfer from College of San Mateo (Calif.) – got SOU on the board with a double that scored Ari Williams. With two outs and the bases loaded later in the inning, Elysia Duarte hit a ground ball that was thrown away by Warriors pitcher Madison Mendez, allowing all three baserunners to come home.

The Raider lineup needed no such assistance in Game 2, totaling 10 hits with three for extra bases. Vanessa Lang went 3-for-4 and broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Three batters later, Kim came up with the bases loaded and cleared them with another double.

Kim and Brooke Nordahl provided the finishing touches with run-scoring, extra-base hits in the seventh. Junior transfer Lexi Ramirez earned her first win in the circle, going all seven innings without allowing an earned run. She gave up four hits, struck out three and walked one.

Lang and leadoff hitter Kalea Thomas, a redshirt-freshman outfielder, had four hits and two stolen bases apiece on the day.

Westcliff fell to 3-3.
