T-Birds take CCC series, Raiders win non-conference finale

ASHLAND – Behind Carleen Murray's shutout performance, British Columbia won the Cascade Conference rubber match against Southern Oregon, 3-0, but the Raiders salvaged an overall series split with a 3-1 win in the finale as Lexi Ramirez spun another gem and helped herself at the plate on Saturday at Laurel Park.

The Raiders ended the weekend at 21-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play. The Thunderbirds landed at 14-8 and 5-1.

After the teams split Friday's doubleheader, Murray struck out seven and limited the Raiders to five hits in the third CCC affair as the Thunderbirds blanked SOU for the second game in a row. The game's only run-scoring hit came off the bat of their No. 9 hitter, Casey Lo, who gapped a three-RBI triple to left-center field in the second inning.

The Raiders brought the potential tying run to the plate in the fifth and again in the seventh but couldn't cash in. Ayla Davies, who didn't allow an earned run in her Game 1 win on Friday, was the tough-luck loser despite holding UBC hitless over her final 3 2/3 innings. Elysia Duarte went 2-for-3 with a double and Ari Williams tripled.

Ramirez saved the day for SOU in the non-conference series finale, allowing one run in a complete game for the fourth time in her last five starts. She struck out five, walked one, gave up seven hits and kept the potential tying run stranded on base in the seventh inning by getting cleanup hitter Zoe Willington to fly out.

Earlier in the contest, Ramirez also gave the Raiders the lead with her bat. With the bases loaded and the score tied at 1-1 in the third inning, she singled through the infield to drive in Williams and Brooke Nordahl. She went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Williams drove in SOU's other run in the first inning, singling to right field to bring home Vanessa Lang and tie the score.

The Raiders are back on the road next weekend, traveling to Salem for a four-game series with Corban. They're back home March 27-28 against Bushnell.
