ASHLAND – Thanks to complete-game shutouts from
Ayla Davies and
Tatiana Blas, Southern Oregon needed only two big offensive innings to win 4-0 and 6-0 against Simpson (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon at Laurel Park.
Davies threw a two-hitter in Game 1, where the No. 6-ranked Raiders put up a four-run fifth, and Blas followed with a two-hitter in Game 2, where they scored all six of their runs in the third. The Raiders finished their perfect homestand at 33-13 overall and 13-8 in the Cascade Conference, while the four-game sweep made the Red Hawks 15-28 and 9-12.
All five Raiders who were recognized on their senior day delivered prior to the festivities.
Vanessa Lang broke a Game 1 tie with a two-run triple to the left-field fence before
Ari Williams drove her in with a single. Blas then logged her second shutout in Game 2 as
Gabby Heiken went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and
Michelle Hara punctuated the third-inning rally with a two-run single.
Blas improved to 5-0 on the season, striking out five in her start. Davies went to 15-7 with a six-strikeout performance. It was the second time in the last month that SOU has blanked an opponent through an entire doubleheader.
Davies worked out of trouble twice in the final CCC counter of the series, initially in the fourth after plunking back-to-back batters to start the inning. She retired the next three batters she faced to get out of it, then got a lift in the fifth from left fielder
Elysia Duarte, who made a running catch against the wall with a Red Hawk on second base to keep the game scoreless.
Kalea Thomas went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Game 1.
Lexi Ramirez hit an RBI double in Game 1 and an RBI single in Game 2.
The Raiders wrapped up their regular-season home slate at 12-4. They're on the road to finish the regular season next week at Warner Pacific, entering the series one game in front of British Columbia for third place.
Simpson still has a hold on the sixth and final CCC playoff spot, holding a one-game lead over seventh-place WPU.
