ASHLAND — The top-seeded Southern Oregon beach volleyball team topped Bushnell 3-1 on Thursday in day one of the Cascade Conference Championship presented by U.S. Bank.
The No. 2-ranked Raiders opened the double-elimination tournament with a straight set sweep, coming from their second pair of Kira Sandoval and Molly Grace (21-12, 21-15) before the Beacon's fourth pair defeated Amanda Moffat and Kaitlyn Shilling (21-19 and 21-17) to even the score 1-1.
The No. 5 pair of Natalie Perez and Kendal Hadwick (21-9, 21-16) gave the Raiders a 2-1 edge and No. 3 pair Andressa Ribeiro Soares and Maelle Garon clinched the victory, winning 21-10, 21-17.
The Raiders improved their win streak to 13 consecutive duals and upped their undefeated home record this season to 7-0. They haven't given up more than one match in over a month.
Individual matches were stopped on Thursday as soon as a team clinched a dual victory, but SOU's top pair of Tessa Zimmermann and Grace Gulbrandsen was leading 21-18, 16-11 before their match ended.
Southern Oregon (17-2) was slated to play No. 3-ranked Corban (21-5) at 4 p.m., but lightning strikes delayed play in the third dual of the day between College of Idaho (7-10) and Bushnell (9-13). Play resumed between the Yotes and Beacons at 5 p.m., but the SOU/Corban matchup was rescheduled to Friday at 9 a.m.
In the first dual of the day, Corban won 3-1 over College of Idaho and in dual three, Bushnell bounced back from its loss against SOU by eliminating College of Idaho from the tournament, winning a 3-2 nail-biter.
