A big second half wasn't enough as the Southern Oregon men's basketball team fell 68-66 to Dominican University tonight in San Rafael, Calif.
Dominican improved to 1-0 on the season and SOU fell to 1-1. The Raiders travel to Eugene Sunday afternoon for an exhibition game against Oregon.
“It was a great comeback,” SOU Head Coach
Brian McDermott said. “We had a good pace and they (Dominican) were dead tired, but the whistles kept giving them a rest. This was a tough road trip. Of course we would have liked to been 2-0, but we'll take 1-1.”
The Raiders trailed 37-26 at the half before a huge second half comeback.
Sophomore
Austin Wolfer (Woodburn, Ore./Woodburn) hit a pair of free throws early in the second half to cap a 14-1 SOU run and give the Raiders their first lead at 40-38.
The rest of the second half was back and forth.
The Raiders looked to be in full control late as a breakaway layup by
Humphrey Jackson (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) gave SOU a 62-58 lead with 3:45 to play.
Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) then added a pair of free throws to push the lead to 64-59 with under 3:00 to play.
But one play changed all that.
Dominican's Adam Chavis, last year's Cal Pac Conference Player of the Year, hit a bucket and was fouled. The SOU bench was then hit with a technical foul. The Penquins made one of two free throws for the technical foul and Chavis then made his free throw to give DU the lead 65-64 with 2:01 to play.
Trailing 67-66, SOU had a chance to win at the end, but Jackson's driving attempt missed with .4 remaining in the game.
Childs led the Raiders with 19 points.
The Raiders made just 36 percent from the field and went 2-for-19 from 3-point land.
“We are going to be alright,” McDermott said. “Sooner or later we'll start hitting some shots.”
