Raider Men Upset No. 5 Eastern

A career-high 36 points from junior guard Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) helped lead the Southern Oregon men's basketball team to an 82-77 upset of fifth-ranked Eastern Oregon tonight at McNeal Pavilion in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams.

SOU improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Raiders host the College of Idaho Saturday night. Eastern Oregon fell to 6-2 overall and 0-1 conference action.

Childs scored 36 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the field and a 9-for-10 effort at the free throw line. He also made three 3-pointers, came away with four steals and handed out three assists.

The Raiders played almost perfect basketball in the first 20 minutes. SOU hung around the 70 percent shooting area for most the half before finishing the half shooting 67 percent.

A layup by Childs gave SOU a 20-7 lead with 13:15 left in the first half and the lead was 48-28 at the half.

Eastern showed why they are one of the top teams in the Nation by coming right back in the second half.

A layup by Jeremy Templeton cut the Raider lead to 64-53 with 8:03 to play. A pair of free throws by Kris Groce trimmed it to 67-60 with just over six minutes left.

The lead stayed around six until Templeton connected on a pair of layups to trim the lead to 78-75. In the final minute, SOU's Kory Mahr went 3-for-4 from the free throw line to close the deal.

SOU finished shooting 59 percent from the field for the game.

Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) finished with 15 points and had a team-high six steals.

Eastern Oregon was paced by Paul Carollo's 17 points.
