Ben Pawlak had the final say in a back-and-forth battle as Cascade College scored a 100-99 overtime victory over the Southern Oregon men's basketball team tonight in Portland.
Cascade, a night after knocking off top-ranked Oregon Tech, improved to 10-6 overall and 3-5 in Cascade Conference action. Southern Oregon fell to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
Pawlak finished with 21 points to lead Cascade.
Josh McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and
Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) both had 21 points for the Raiders.
Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) had 19 points and
Humphrey Jackson (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) finished with 11 points.
The Raiders were up 35-30 with 7:00 left in the first half after shooting 63 percent from the field and 80 percent from 3-point range.
But Cascade closed out the half on a 29-7 run to lead 59-42 halftime advantage.
The Raiders came storming back in the second half.
After trailing by as much as 21 early in the second half, the Raiders rallied to tie the game at 89-89 with 1:18 to play on a basket by Childs. Childs was fouled on the shot, but missed his free throw.
On the other end, Pawlak made a pair of free throws to push the Cascade advantage to 91-89 with :58 to play.
Thornton tied the game again at 91-91 with :28 to play and the two teams were headed to overtime.
Jackson opened the overtime period for SOU with a steal and layup to give SOU a 93-91 lead.
The game was tied at 94-94 when Pawlak nailed a 3-pointer and then made a free throw to complete a rare four point play to give Cascade a 98-94 lead.
The Raiders came right back and cut the lead to one on a 3-pinter by McDermott with 1:23 to play.
After a Cascade miss,
Scott Tiefenthaler (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel) made a pair of free throws with :20 to play to give SOU the lead back at 99-98.
But at the end it was Pawlak again, hitting a jumper with :05 left to give Cascade the victory.
SOU travels to Eugene Monday to battle Evergreen State College in a makeup game.
