SOU Men Head East For CCC Battles

1/29/2009 1:06:58 PM

Marking the end of January, the Southern Oregon men's basketball team is set to travel to Idaho to take on the College of Idaho Coyotes Friday night before battling the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers on Saturday.

The Raiders are currently 7-14 overall and 5-7 in conference action after falling to then 10th-ranked Evergreen State 96-82 last Saturday at McNeal Pavilion.

Junior Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) leads the Raiders averaging 13.9 points per game while senior Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) is second on the team with 11.9.

The Coyotes (12-10, 8-4) went 1-2 last week with losses to No. 13 Warner Pacific and Cascade with their victory coming against the same Cascade squad that defeated them earlier in the week.

The Coyotes have all but solidified their place in the playoffs while sitting fifth in the Cascade Conference playoff race. The Coyotes scored a 55-44 victory over the Raiders at McNeal Pavilion earlier this year.

Following the matchup against the Coyotes, the Raiders will travel to Eastern Oregon to take on the defending Cascade Conference champion Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers (15-5, 8-4) are riding a seven-game winning streak placing them once again in the NAIA Top 25 at 18th and third in the Cascade Conference. SOU knocked off them fifth-ranked Eastern Oregon back in December to open up conference play.

The Raiders currently hold the seventh spot in the Cascade Conference with the top eight teams making the playoffs.

Five teams are now within 3.5 games of each other battling for the sixth through the tenth spots with only three of the five making the playoffs.

After this road trip, the Raiders will head back to McNeal Pavilion for a four game home stand before finishing the schedule on the road Feb. 21.

The Raiders are 1-8 this season on the road and 0-5 in conference play.
