Playoffs On The Line For SOU Men

2/19/2009 1:10:16 PM

Coming off a late game collapse against Northwest Christian last Friday, the Southern Oregon men's basketball team will look to bounce back in a season-ending weekend road trip with a trip to the playoffs on the line.

The Raiders sit in seventh place in the Cascade Conference, just a game ahead of Northwest and Corban who are tied for eighth place. The top eight teams go to next week's conference tournament.

SOU (9-18 overall, 7-11 conference) travels to Salem to take on Corban Friday before travelling to Portland to challenge Concordia in the season ending matchup Saturday night.

The Raiders have put themselves in the driver's seat for the upcoming playoff surge, needing to win one game to wrap up a playoff berth.

Corban must equal Northwest's win total this weekend to make the playoffs.

If the Raiders get swept this weekend, and Corban and Northwest win out, the Raiders would be eliminated from the playoffs.

The Raiders will be looking for their leading scorers to bounce back this weekend as Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) only put up 10 points against Northwest Christian, while leading scorer Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) only had four points while battling a cold.

Corban enters Friday's night game with a 10-17 overall mark and a 6-12 conference record. Back in early January, the Raiders escaped with a thrilling 75-73 victory.

“Last time we couldn't contain the penetration and that is the key to winning at their place,” SOU head coach Brian McDermott said.

The second matchup of the weekend pairs the Raiders with last place Concordia.

The Cavaliers (9-19, 3-15) are the only team in the conference already eliminated from playoff contention and the Raiders scored an 81-73 victory over the Cavs back on Jan. 2 at McNeal Pavilion.

“They can have their good nights and their bad nights, so it just depends on who shows up that particular night,” McDermott said.
