The Southern Oregon men's basketball team fell at Concordia 80-71 tonight in Portland, but still managed to wrap up a playoff spot for the first time since 2006-07.
Southern Oregon finishes the regular season 9-20 overall and 7-13 in Cascade Conference play. Concordia finishes 10-20 overall and 4-16 in conference.
SOU, Corban and Northwest all finished with 7-13 conference records and tied for the seventh and eighth playoff spots. Thanks to a tiebreaker, the Raiders will go to the conference tournament as the No. 7 seed. The Raiders travel to Eastern Oregon Wednesday night.
Concordia's Steven Vaughn led all scorers with 23 points.
Austin Wolfer (Woodburn, Ore./Woodburn) led SOU with 20 points.
Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) finished with 19 points, while
Josh McDermott (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) added 12 and
Armani Jackson (Hercules, Calif./Pinole Valley) came off the bench for 11.
Concordia was on fire in the first half and built a 35-26 lead with 4:13 to play before halftime.
SOU came back and tied the game at 39-39 on a fast break layup by McDermott. After Concordia took a brief 41-39 lead, the Raiders tied it again with 18:11 to play and the scored stayed there until Vaughan hit back-to-back 3-pointers four minutes later to push the lead to 47-41.
SOU answered back with layups by Jackson and Wolfer to trim the Cav advantage to 49-47.
The game stayed close throughout and a jumper by senior
Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) – his first basket of the game – got the Raiders to within one at 62-61 with 6:17 left.
Childs tied the game at 63-63 with 5:05 to play on a pair of free throws.
Concordia pulled away once again on a 3-pointer by Vaughn for a 72-67 lead with 2:00 to play and Vaughn hit a jumper with under a minute to play to ice game.
