The Southern Oregon men's basketball team will have be road warriors if they want to go deep in the Cascade Conference Postseason Tournament.
The seventh-seeded Raiders (9-20) travel to second-seeded and 10th-ranked Eastern Oregon (22-6) Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Raiders have dropped three straight heading into the playoffs, while the Mountaineers had a 14-game win streak snapped Saturday night when they fell to Northwest Christian.
“We've lost three games in a row before,” SOU head coach
Brian McDermott said. “All we are thinking about is what we have to do against Eastern.”
Eastern and Southern split their two regular season matchups. SOU scored an impressive 82-77 victory over then fifth-ranked Eastern Oregon in early December, while Eastern got revenge with an 84-49 victory in La Grande in January.
SOU's victory over the Mountaineers was one of three victories for the Raiders over Top 10 ranked teams.
The Mountaineers rank second in the conference in points per game at 84.4 and rank third in allowing just 71.1 per game.
Kris Groce goes for 15.3 points for the Mountaineers and teammate Neil Fryer averages 14.6.
“They are a completely different team then we are,” McDermott said. “They are big and strong at virtually every spot and are very structured. We are more wide open. The key will be getting them out of their structure. That's what happened in the first game, but didn't happen in the second game.”
SOU is led by junior
Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles)' 13.7 points per game. Senior
Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) is averaging 11 points and three assists. Thornton is also shooting 52 percent from the field.
The Cascade Conference Tournament is the only way to the National Tournament for the Raiders. SOU will need to win the tournament to get the automatic berth.
The other first round matchups on Wednesday include: Top seed Oregon Tech hosts eighth-seeded Corban, third-seeded Warner Pacific hosts sixth-seeded Northwest Christian and fifth-seeded College of Idaho hosts fourth-seeded Evergreen State.
