Jarrad Childs (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) scored 22 points and the Southern Oregon men held Cascade to one point in a five minute stretch as the Raiders came away with a 72-69 victory tonight at McNeal Pavilion.
Southern Oregon improved to 8-16 overall and 6-9 in Cascade Conference play and moved into sole possession of seventh place. Cascade dropped to 11-12 overall and 4-11 in conference.
Childs finished with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting and also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Humphrey Jackson (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) finished with 11 points and five assists and
Eli Thornton (Victorville, Calif./Victorville) had 10 points and also had five assists.
Cascade's Cornell Littlejohn led all scorers with 26 points.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first half as Cascade held a slim 38-37 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Raiders took a 42-38 lead on a three point play by Childs. Cascade responded with an 11-1 run to lead 49-43.
Childs tied the game at 58-58 and Thornton pushed lead to 64-58.
Josh Brown hit a jumper for Cascade to cut the lead to 64-62 with 6:02 to play and that was almost it for the Thunderbirds.
Cascade's next field goal come on a 3-pointer by Littlejohn with 52 seconds remaining in the game to trim the SOU lead to 69-66.
A free throw by Childs with 29 seconds left pushed the SOU lead to 72-69 and Cascade missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that would have tied the game.
SOU shot 51 percent in the second half, but only made 40 percent of their free throws.
SOU hosts Warner Pacific Saturday night.
