Kyle Wirkuty (Portland, Ore./Centennial) and
Austin Vanderford (Ninilchik, Alaska/Ninilchik) both came away with fourth place finishes to lead four All-Americans for Southern Oregon at the NAIA Naitonal Wrestling Championships.
The Raiders finished ninth as a team with 73.5 points. Notre Dame (Ohio) cruised to its second-straight National Championship with 170 points and two individual National Champs.
Wirkuty (141), Vanderford (174),
Tommie Hooper (Burns, Ore./Burns) (157) and
Derek Rottenberg (Red Bluff, Calif./Red Bluff) (184) all earned All-American honors. Wirkuty and Vanderford both finished fourth, Hooper finished fifth and Rottenberg finished sixth.
Wirkuty started off his day with an upset of third-ranked Drew Smith of Morningside. Wirkuty scored a takedown in the first period and then after two escapes by Smith, the pair were headed to overtime. Both wrestlers had escapes in the second overtime and in the third overtime, Wirkuty scored a takedown to win the match. In the third and fourth place match against second-ranked Tommy Pretty of Campbellsville, Wirkuty was up 4-3 heading into the third period before Pretty scored a takedown for a 5-4 victory. Wirkuty, who finished second last year, now has two All-American honors and finishes the season with a 24-14 record.
Vanderford wasted no time getting going in his consolation semifinal matchup. Vanderford scored four points in the first period and then six in the third period for a 10-5 victory over Missouri Valley's Preston McKinney. In the third place match against eighth-ranked Jon Bittenger of Notre Dame, Vanderford fell behind 2-0 in the first period and then cut the lead to 2-1 with a second period escape. But that's as close as Vanderford would get as he fell 5-2. Vanderford earned his first All-American honor and finishes the season with a 31-6 record.
Hooper, ranked fourth at 157, fell in his consolation semifinal match to start the day. Top-ranked Tyler Chang of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back and scored a second period 22-6 tech fall. Hooper rebounded in a big way, scoring a 22 second pin of Midland's Kyle Conley to take fifth place and end his season with a 22-9 record. Hooper has now come away with three straight All-American honors.
Rottenberg, making his first trip the NAIA Nationals, was injured during the first period of his match against third-ranked Kyle Reid of McKendree and had to default the consolation semifinal match. Rottenberg came back in the fifth and sixth place match and was pinned in 2:11 to Grand View's Tommy Perez.
