Box Score ASHLAND – A Friday night matchup between two NAIA Div. II top-12 teams lived up to its billing as No. 12 Southern Oregon upset No. 2 Eastern Oregon 72-68 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at Bob Riehm Arena.
Southern Oregon improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while Eastern Oregon falls to 14-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCC. Both teams return to action Saturday, with the Raiders hosting College of Idaho and the Mountaineers taking on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls at 7:30 p.m.
Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Southern Oregon, connecting on 7 of his 10 shot attempts, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) tallied 15 points and
David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) added 14 for the Raiders, while
Jeff Bush (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) dished out 10 assists.
Trent Roos led Eastern Oregon with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Cody Thurmond totaled 15 points and Anthony Brown finished with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Southern Oregon finished the game with a 43.8 percent shooting mark (28-of-64), while Eastern Oregon made 42.4 percent of its shots (25-of-59).
The first half featured two tie scores and seven lead changes as both teams struggled to make shots. Southern Oregon connected on only 32.4 percent (11-of-34) in the opening period, with Eastern Oregon only doing marginally better at 35.7 percent (10-of-28). The Mountaineers closed the half with a slim 25-24 lead.
Both teams picked it up in the second half, nearly doubling their first-half scoring output. The Raiders connected on 56.7 percent of their shots (17-of-30) in the second period, while the Mountaineers made 48.4 percent (15-of-31).
After the Raiders took a 32-30 lead on a three-pointer by Tedder, EOU's Roos responded with a trey to spark a nine-point EOU run that gave the Mountaineers a 39-32 lead with 14:24 to play. Thirty seconds later a pair of Cody Thurmond free throws pushed the advantage to eight points – the visitors' largest lead of the game – before SOU used back-to-back threes by Tedder and another by Thompson to erase the deficit and make it 44-43 SOU.
Southern Oregon scored the next four points to take its largest lead of the game as a Sturner layup capped a 12-point SOU streak, but Eastern scored the next seven points and the game remained close the rest of the way. The ninth and final tie score of the night came at 65-65 with 91 seconds remaining before
Dex Daum (Fallon, Nev./Churchill) made a layup to reclaim a lead the Raiders would hold through the final minute.
Tedder followed an EOU turnover with a bucket to push SOU up by four with only 19 seconds remaining, but the Mountaineers' Roos drove through the lane for a quick layup to make it 69-67 with 14 seconds to play. Tedder made three of four free throw attempts in the final 10 seconds of the game to clinch the victory for SOU and hand Eastern Oregon its first loss of the season.
