Raider Men Look to Stay Undefeated in the CCC Against CU and No. 14 WPC

ASHLAND – A home upset of the previously-undefeated No. 2 Eastern Oregon and an overtime win over College of Idaho earned Southern Oregon the Cascade Collegiate Conference Team of the Week honor, but the 12th-ranked Raiders have to put that behind them and focus on tough road tests this weekend against Concordia and No. 14 Warner Pacific.

Southern Oregon, 11-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play, defeated the nation's second-ranked team for the second time this season with the 72-68 win over EOU on Friday and followed it up with a 100-93 overtime victory over College of Idaho. The wins gave SOU a 4-0 conference start for the first time since 2005.

“Both proved to be really good teams, and we had some good basketball going on,” SOU head coach Brian McDermott said. “It's one of those things where three or four points difference and you could be 0-2 and you're not nearly as happy. We shot the ball real well and we were fortunate to come out with a couple wins.”

The Raiders have begun to click offensively, ranking seventh nationally in field goal percentage (.499) and 18th in scoring (81.4 points per game). But in a 10-team conference where five teams garnered votes in the latest NAIA poll, every weekend presents a new challenge. Southern Oregon will take on Concordia on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday, with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Road wins in this league are very tough to come by, and we feel like we have a chance at both of them,” McDermott said. “If we can take care of some business there, we'll be in very good shape heading into the break.”

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) averages 17.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game to lead the Raiders, while Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) has caught fire from three-point range the past few games to increase his season scoring average to 13.3 points. Tedder made 13 of 19 shots from beyond the arc over the weekend to garner CCC Player of the Week honors. David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) has added 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest.

Concordia comes into Friday's game with a 4-6 overall record and an 0-3 league mark. The Cavaliers have faced a difficult early-season conference schedule, losing to Eastern Oregon, College of Idaho and Warner Pacific on the road.

“They've played three of the best teams in our league already, and all of them on the road, so I don't know that the record is a real good indication of how good they are,” McDermott said.

Concordia ranks fourth in the NAIA in rebounding (45.8) and eighth in blocks (4.3), with Adam Herman leading the nation in scoring (25.7 points per game).Herman also ranks second nationally in rebounds (11.4) and 15th in shooting percentage (.595), while Justyn Searle has averaged 2.3 blocks per contest. Willy Ligon has averaged 16.4 points per game as well for the Cavaliers.

“They've got a nice team; they've just got a pretty well-rounded crew,” McDermott said. “They have certainly one of the best players in the league in Adam Herman. This year he's expanded his game a little bit. He's gone out to the three-point line a little, he definitely can put it on the floor and get by bigs that are guarding him, and he's just got a wonderful touch inside.”

Southern Oregon has faced Concordia 52 times and holds a slim 28-24 advantage in the series. The Raiders have won four of the last five matchups between the teams, including a season sweep over the Cavs last year that included an 80-77 win in Ashland and a 68-61 win in Portland.

Saturday's game will be another nationally-ranked matchup for the Raiders, with No. 14 coming into the weekend at 9-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Knights' lone conference loss was a two-point road defeat to No. 2 Eastern Oregon. They average 75.5 points per game, led by Stephen Harris' 17.2. Doug Thomas (13.5) and Coletun Tarr (10.3) have also averaged double-figures for the Knights, with Harris' 10.9 rebounds per game giving him a double-double average for the season.

“Warner Pac is obviously one of the better teams in our league,” McDermott said. “Warner Pac gives us a different look than any team in the league. They're going to zone all night long. This year they're pressing a lot for most of the game. On the second night it's a little bit tougher to prepare for that kind of stuff, but we'll have to do our best.”

The Raiders are 23-29 all-time against Warner Pacific, with the Knights controlling the series in recent years. Warner Pacific won 11 straight games against Southern Oregon from 2005-2010, and the Knights have won 14 of the last 16 matchups between the teams. Last season the teams split during the regular season before WPC ended the Raiders' season in an 82-78 overtime thriller in the conference tournament.
