Box Score PORTLAND – The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team earned its fifth consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference victory to open the league season, holding off Concordia 77-72 Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.
Southern Oregon improves to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while Concordia falls to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Saturday, when they will visit No. 14 Warner Pacific at 7:30 p.m.
David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) made seven of his 10 shot attempts to score 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to post a double-double for the Raiders.
Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) tallied 16 points, while
Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) finished with 13 points and
Taylor Roos (Salem, Ore./Sprague) added 11 in the win. Willy Ligon led Concordia with 12 points, while Adam Herman, Jesse Armstrong and Kory Kirwan each totaled 11. Justyn Searle grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Southern Oregon stifled Herman, who entered the game ranking among NAIA leaders in scoring and rebounding, limiting the CU leader to only six shot attempts and six total rebounds. The Raiders shot 49.1 percent as a team (27-of-55) while holding Concordia to 40.6 percent shooting (26-64).
Concordia opened fast, scoring 11 of the first 14 points to claim an eight-point lead less than three minutes into the game. That proved to be CU's largest lead of the night, and Southern Oregon scored the next six points and 11 of the next 13 to take a 14-13 lead with 12:44 to play in the first half. The Raiders stretched their lead to eight points five minutes later when a Thompson three-pointer made it 27-19, but Concordia worked its way back to tie it up at 32-32 going into the break.
The Raiders used an 11-2 run to take a nine-point lead following a trey by Sturner early in the second half, but a seven-point CU run a few minutes later helped the Cavaliers tie it up at 55 apiece with less than eight minutes to play. Roos made a layup to end the Concordia run and reclaim the lead for SOU.
Southern Oregon led by a slim margin the rest of the way, with a pair of Herman free throws trimming the lead to one point with 28 seconds remaining. Sturner responded with a dunk to put the Raiders back up three and in the closing seconds
Dex Daum (Fallon, Nev./Churchill) dropped a dunk of his own to close out the five-point road win.
