Box Score PORTLAND – Southern Oregon overcame a 21-point second-half deficit to force overtime, but No. 14 Warner Pacific made 11 free throws in the overtime period to knock off the 12th-ranked Raiders 91-88 in Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball action Saturday night at Bart Valentine Court.
Southern Oregon falls to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play with its first CCC loss of the season, while Warner Pacific improves to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Jan. 2, when they will host William Jessup in a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.
The Raiders shot only 28.6 percent (10-of-35) in the first half and finished the game at 38.5 percent (30-of-78) in the loss.
David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) led the way with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while
Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) also posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) totaled 19 points and
Taylor Roos (Salem, Ore./Sprague) added 13 for SOU.
Ryan Parks scored 25 points while making eight of his 12 shot attempts from beyond the three-point line to lead Warner Pacific, while Stephen Harris made 14 free throws to total 18 points with 18 rebounds. Josh Black finished with 19 points and Coletun Tarr added 11 for the Knights.
Warner Pacific led throughout the game, scoring the final 10 points of the opening half to take a 36-25 lead into the break. The Knights opened the second half on a 14-4 run to stretch their advantage to 50-29 with 14:59 to play before a Roos layup ended the WPC run and began the Raiders' slow and improbable comeback.
A three-pointer by Tedder with 9:55 to play capped a 16-3 SOU run that pulled the Raiders to within eight points, but Parks responded with back-to-back treys as Warner Pacific pushed its lead back to 15 points with 8:39 remaining.
Over the following three minutes, Southern Oregon scored 11 consecutive points to make it 60-56 with just over five minutes to play. Warner Pacific again responded with a run of its own to extend the lead back into double-figures, with a free throw by Zac Compton making it 68-58 with only 2:32 remaining.
Southern Oregon made four three-pointers and scored 14 points in the final 48 seconds of regulation, with the 14-5 run tying the game in the closing seconds and forcing overtime. Tedder opened the run with a three-pointer to make it 70-64, and after Black made a pair of free throws Roos hit a three of his own to pull the Raiders within five with only 14 seconds to play.
Parks made one of two free throw attempts, and two more Tedder treys sandwiched a pair of free throws by Doug Thomas to pull SOU within two points with two seconds on the clock. Tarr committed a deadball foul to turn the ball back over to the Raiders, and
Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) passed the ball in to Sturner at the rim for the tying layup.
Warner Pacific led throughout the overtime period, with the Knights' advantage ranging between one and five points. Southern Oregon made 4-of-9 shot attempts in the extra time, including a pair of three-pointers, but the Raiders' three free throws could not compete with WPC's 11-of-12 mark at the charity stripe. The Raiders' final chance came in the closing seconds when Weber missed a potential tying three-pointer at the buzzer to close out the 91-88 WPC win.
