Seven Raiders Place in Top-Three at Mile High Open

PRESCOTT, Ariz. –
Seven Southern Oregon wrestlers placed in the top three of their respective weight classes, led by top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) claiming the 125-pound title Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Mile High Open.

Second-ranked Southern Oregon returns to action Thursday, when the Raiders will travel to Forest Grove to take on Pacific at 5 p.m.

Lofstedt pinned all three of his opponents Saturday to claim the title in the 125-pound bracket. Third-ranked Miguel Baltazar (Culver, Ore./Culver) and No. 1 Prescott Garner (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) tied for the title in the 133-pound bracket. Baltazar earned a decision victory in the semifinal, while Garner earned a shutout major decision win in his semifinal matchup to pit the teammates against each other in a championship bout. The two did not compete in the bout, leading to a double-forfeit.

Justin Eldred (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) earned second in the 141, picking up decision victories in the first two rounds. He won a major decision in the semifinal before falling to California Baptist's Bradford Gerl by a 19-2 technical fall in the championship match. Eleventh-ranked Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) placed second in the 157. He opened the day with a major decision victory in the first round before pinning his next two opponents. Unattached wrestler Andy Rico defeated Urrutia in the championship round with a 41-second pin.

Sixteenth-ranked Jacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka) placed second in the 184. Abrams pinned his first opponent before claiming decision wins in the next two rounds. His quest for the title ended in the final, when unattached wrestler John McCardle pinned Abrams in 6:45. Twelfth-ranked Tyler Thomas (Salem, Ore./McKay) gave the Raiders their seventh and final top-three placer with a third-place finish in the 184. Thomas pinned his first two opponents before falling to McCardle in the semifinals. Thomas earned a decision victory in the consolation semifinal and won the third-place match by forfeit.
