Box Score KLAMATH FALLS – Southern Oregon stormed out to a 20-point first-half lead and held off Oregon Tech in the second half as the 12th-ranked Raider men defeated the Owls 74-63 Saturday night to earn SOU's first win over OIT in Klamath Falls since 1999.
Southern Oregon improves to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play with Oregon Tech falling to 10-9 overall and 1-6 in the CCC. The Raiders return to action Friday, when they will return home to host Evergreen in a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup at Bob Riehm Arena.
Kyle Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) continued his torrid shooting, knocking down four of his five shot attempts from beyond the arc and six of eight overall to lead the Raiders with 22 points.
David Sturner (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) dominated down low, grabbing 23 rebounds to tie for the fourth-most in a single game in SOU history. Sturner also scored 14 points in the win, with
Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) tallying 13 points and eight rebounds and
Taylor Roos (Salem, Ore./Sprague) adding 10 points. Josh Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, making five three-pointers to finish as the only Owl with double-figures in the scoring column.
With Southern Oregon's 76-60 win over then-No. 2 Oregon Tech on Nov. 20, the Raiders have now won two games against OIT in the same season for the first time since 1999. The rivals will meet one more time in the 2012-13 regular season, with the Owls coming to Ashland on Feb. 2 for one more CCC matchup.
Southern Oregon scored the first eight points of the game and took a 20-point lead when a three-pointer by Tedder made it 29-9 with 8:58 to play in the first half. The Raiders matched that lead with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period, when another Tedder three made it 38-18. Oregon Tech scored the next six points before a pair of Sturner free throws closed out the half with SOU leading 40-24.
Oregon Tech worked its way back into the game in the second half, using a seven-point streak to pull within four points at 53-49 with 6:20 remaining in the game. The Raiders scored the next four points, but OIT tallied the next six to make it 58-56 following a Johnson three-pointer. Tedder responded with three-pointers on consecutive possessions for SOU, and the Raiders made all 10 free throw attempts down the stretch to clinch the 11-point victory.
