ASHLANDJacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka) and Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) made sure the eighth-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestling team captured a couple championships Sunday as the 25th SOU Pete Belcastro Open concluded.

Eighteen other Raiders placed in the top six of their respective weight classes at the 10-team gala. Lucas Randall (Hubbard, Ore./North Marion), an SOU freshman wrestling unattached at 157pounds, was the third Raider who made a run to the finals and finished second.

"We had a lot of guys wrestle who got a lot of experience and that's what this is about," 19th-year SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. "To get a couple of champs out of the deal and have a true freshman in the finals – I'm pleased, and it gives me an idea of where we stand."

Gutches, the No. 1 174-pounder in the NAIA, recorded one technical fall and three pins on the weekend, including a 3-minute, 34-second victory in the finals against Simpson's Brady Beaman, an all-American last season.

Abrams, ranked No. 6 at 184 pounds, took a 5-1 championship decision from North Idaho's Roland Gaydosh. He won his pool with two pins on Saturday.

Randall was the surprise, winning his pool with the help of a pair of pins although he was wrestling up a weight class. He dropped a decision to North Idaho's Nicholas Moreno in the 157-pound final.

Trevor Hancock (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) (133 pounds), Chance Lindquist (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) (141), Tyler Cowger (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) (149) and Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) (165) were all third-place finishers. Hancock won his last bout by forfeit, Cowger won a 15-8 decision, and Lindquist and Urrutia, who was wrestling unattached due to his redshirt, also finished up with decisions.

Jake Stigall (125) won by fall three times in pool play and ultimately took fourth. Craig Trask (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) (157), Chris Moreno (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman) (174), Tucker Van Matre (Kodiak, Alaska/Kodiak) (184) and Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton) (285) were also fourth.

Zach Gill (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) claimed a 5-2 decision in the 285-pound fifth-place match against teammate Chance Crane (Myrtle Creek, Ore./South Umpqua) while Ethan Hinton (Sequim, Wash./Sequim) won his fifth-place match by injury default against teammate Chris Berg (Ukiah, Calif./Ukiah) by at 197 pounds. SOU's other sixth-place wrestlers were Johnathon Gay (Clovis, Calif./Clovis) (141), James Bowers (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) (149) and Kyle Riggs (Lowell, Ore./Lowell).

The Raiders had 24 wrestlers advance out of pool play and into the championship rounds.

"The guys had fun wrestling and that's another reason why we do this," Ritchey said. "Getting to see everyone go at it kind of brings the team together."

Two of the NAIA's top teams will await the Raiders in the week ahead with duals Thursday at No. 2 Montana State-Northern and Friday at No. 6 Great Falls (Mont.).
