Raiders Go 1-2 on Second Day of Red Lion SOU Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 MEDFORD – Southern Oregon began the day with a 10-inning walk-off win over Holy Names, but the Raiders closed the day with losses to British Columbia and Simpson to finish 1-4 at the 2013 Red Lion SOU Softball Tournament Saturday at US Cellular Community Park.

The Raiders knocked off Holy Names 2-1 before falling 7-4 to British Columbia and 8-3 to Simpson. Southern Oregon concludes the nonconference season with a 4-9 overall record and will begin Cascade Collegiate Conference play in two weeks, taking on Eastern Oregon at 2 p.m. on March 8 in La Grande.

Game #1: Southern Oregon 2, Holy Names 1 (10 innings)

Sydney White (Clovis, Calif./Clovis West) went the distance in the pitchers' duel, outlasting Allison Snider to allow one run on four hits with eight strikeouts in 10 innings. Snider allowed only the two runs on six hits, with the Raiders breaking through for the walk-off win when Snider hit Irene Barrantes (Dos Palos, Calif./Dos Palos) with the bases loaded and none out in a tie game.

Ashley Lowe (Sacramento, Calif./Ck. McClatchy) and Lauren Keel (Fullerton, Calif./Rosary) each tallied two hits for the Raiders, with both of Lowe's hits going for doubles. Susan Robertson led Holy Names with a pair of hits.

Holy Names took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Raiders tied it up in the bottom of the seventh.  Lowe hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a passed ball before coming in to score on an HNU error. Back-to-back singles opened the 10th inning for SOU before a walk loaded the bases with no outs and set up Barrantes' game-winning hit-by-pitch.

Game #2: British Columbia 7, Southern Oregon 4

Southern Oregon tallied 11 hits to British Columbia's nine in the game, but the Thunderbirds scored two in the first and added three in the second and the Raiders were unable to come back from the deficit.

Chelsea Talbert (Sacramento, Calif./West Campus) took the loss for the Raiders, while Alana Westerhoff claimed the win and Jamie Randall earned the save for UBC. Keel added to her hit total with a game-high three hits, while Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) and Julia Willison (Reno, Nevada/McQueen) each finished with a pair. Brittany Meyer and Westerhof each tallied two hits, and Cassandra Dypchey knocked a home run.

Consecutive walks opened the first inning, and the leadoff-hitting Keel came around to score on a passed ball to give SOU a temporary lead before UBC scored five runs in the first two innings. The Raiders added two runs in the top of the fifth as Keel doubled and Gonzalez and Lowe singled to make it 5-3. British Columbia scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3.

Southern Oregon scored one more in the sixth, as Willison, Jessica Flores (Corning, Calif./Corning) and Keel all singled in the inning to pull the Raiders again within two. The Thunderbirds scored their final run in the bottom of the inning to claim the 7-4 lead.

Game #3: Simpson 8, Southern Oregon 3

Southern Oregon scored three times in the bottom of the first inning, but the Raiders did not score again the rest of the way as Simpson earned the victory in the tournament finale. Sydney White (Clovis, Calif./Clovis West) took the loss for SOU, while Carlye Avey earned the win for Simpson.

Chelsea Dunn doubled and finished with two hits and three runs driven in for the Red Hawks. After Simpson scored a run in the top of the first, the Raiders responded with three runs on three hits and an SU error in the bottom of the frame. Singles by Lowe and Barrantes followed a double by Gonzalez to put SOU on top before Simpson added three more runs in the top of the second.

From that point, Simpson added another run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to reach eight total runs on eight hits. Southern Oregon left seven runners on base in the loss.
