Box Score 2 CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon bounced back from a 10-7 loss in the opener to pick up a 6-3 victory and claim a doubleheader split against College of Idaho in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball action Saturday at Symms Field.
The split pushes Southern Oregon's record to 7-10 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while College of Idaho goes to 13-11 overall and 1-3 in the CCC. Southern Oregon returns to action Friday when the Raiders host Northwest in the home opener doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) led SOU with three hits, including a home run and a double, while
Jessica Flores (Corning, Calif./Corning) also tallied a trio of hits and
Sierra Anderson (Portland, Ore./Sunset) added a homer. Three College of Idaho players finished with multiple hits on the day.
Southern Oregon scored a run in each of the first four innings of the opener, but six C of I runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Yotes an insurmountable lead for the win.
Sydney White (Clovis, Calif./Clovis West) took the loss for the Raiders, yielding eight earned runs on six hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. Nickayla Skinner earned the win with a complete-game performance.
Gonzalez began the scoring in the top of the first, reaching on a walk and coming around to score on a C of I error. The Yotes scored three runs on a Paige Gabiola homer to center in the bottom of the inning. Southern Oregon added another run in the second, as
Stephanie Vandenbusch (Fremont, Calif./American) was hit by a pitch, advanced on a bunt and a single and scored on a passed ball.
The Raiders tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third on Gonzalez's homer, but the Yotes reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. One more run in the top of the fourth again tied it up, as
Irene Barrantes (Dos Palos, Calif./Dos Palos) doubled and scored on a Yote error.
College of Idaho broke the tie for good with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with a home run by Rachael Strong. The Raiders rallied for three more runs on three hits in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Anderson's two-run homer, but it was not enough as C of I claimed the 10-7 win.
Saturday's second game again featured a late tie score and three Raider runs in the top of the seventh, with SOU earning the comeback victory. White came in to pitch in the second inning and shut down the Yotes, pitching six innings and striking out nine to earn the win. Cortni Pena took the loss for College of Idaho.
College of Idaho scored three runs in the first two innings, but that would be the end of the Yotes' offensive threat for the game. The Raiders got on the board in the top of the first. Flores singled through the right side to open the inning and
Lauren Keel (Fullerton, Calif./Rosary) and Gonzalez walked to load the bases.
Ashley Lowe (Sacramento, Calif./Ck. McClatchy) drove Flores home with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Southern Oregon scored again in the top of the fourth. Barrantes singled, stole both second and third and scored on Flores' second single of the game. The Raiders tied it up in the top of the sixth as Barrantes reached on an error, stole second and scored on a
Julia Willison (Reno, Nevada/McQueen) single.
Three more SOU runs on three hits in the top of the seventh gave the Raiders the 6-3 win. Keel and
Kara Kelsey (Middleton, N.J./Middletown North) opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Gonzalez drove them both home with a double. A pair of infield groundouts advanced Gonzalez to third and eventually home as SOU earned the doubleheader split.
