Parks' School Record Leads Raiders to Impressive Weekend at Chico

CHICO, Calif. – Seven event titles and nine national qualifying marks led the Southern Oregon track and field program to one of its most trips to Chico as two athletes challenged school records and the men's team finished second overall at the 2013 Chico State Distance Medley and Twilight Invitational.

Danny Parks (Eugene, Ore./) surpassed a 25-year-old school record in the discus to improve on last week's NAIA 'A' standard qualifier and climb to third in the nation in the event. Parks' throw of 178-8 beat Randy Settell's previous record of 175-6 ½ from 1998 and earned the junior the event title on Saturday. He also hit Cascade Collegiate Conference marks in the shot put and the hammer.

Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley) nearly beat the program record in the 400-meter hurdles, instead “settling” for a more than two-second personal best in the event with a time of 1:01.56. She placed first in the race and now ranks second in the nation and second in the SOU record books behind Jill Carrier's 1995 record of 1:01.33.

The Southern Oregon men's national dominance of the 1500-meter event continued, as Jared Hixon (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale) hit the 'A' qualifier with a time of 3:54.03. He joins Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista), Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) and Kevin Jorgenson as Raiders who have now qualified in the event, with the latter three ranking among the NAIA's top five.

Sam Hartinger (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) had the best day of his young career on Saturday, finishing third in the triple jump with an NAIA provisional qualifying mark of 47-2 ½ while also hitting the CCC qualifier with a second-place showing in the high jump.

Hixon added a provisional qualifying time and a first-place performance in the men's 5,000-meter race, finishing in 14:50.69. Sullivan Stevens (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs) rounded out the Raiders' national qualifiers on the day with a 'B' time of 14.95 in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event.

Other event titles on the weekend for the Raiders went to Trevor Lynn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills) in the steeplechase and the men's 4x400-meter relay team. Lynn ran a CCC-qualifying time of 9:35.92, while the men's relay team of Nick Perrino (Reno, Nev./McQueen), Chase Bussing (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris), Stevens and Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) won the race with a time of 3:20.15.

Overall, Southern Oregon finished the meet with 45 CCC marks and a second-place men's team performance, behind only meet host Chico State. The Raiders return to action this weekend, traveling to Eugene on Friday for the Oregon Relays.
