SOU, Martinez finish strong at Cal Poly Humboldt Invite

ARCATA, Calif. — Katherine Martinez won the women's pole vault and three other Raiders qualified for the Cascade Conference Championships at the Cal Poly Humboldt Invite on Saturday. 

Martinez cleared 12 feet 5.5 inches (3.80m), winning the event for the second time in three appearances this outdoor season. It's the second-highest mark of the senior's career and her fourth time clearing 12 feet. Sydney Perkins set a new personal best by two inches, vaulting 11-11 ¾ to claim second place and the No. 5 spot on the NAIA performance list. 

Brodie Leslie finished third of 12 runners in the men's 400-meter with a CCC qualifying time of 50.03 seconds. He doubled back later in the afternoon, placing fifth of 28 in the 200 with a personal best and another CCC qualifying time of 22.31 seconds. 

Two more vaulters also posted CCC qualifying marks and personal bests. Isaiah Sherman cleared 13-0 ¾ and Laurelin Jansen vaulted 9-6 ¼. 

Izzie Calingasan ran a six-second personal best and her fastest time in nearly three years, finishing fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:25.37. She later finished 10th in the 1,500 with a time of 5:19.12. 

In the women's 5,000, Mercedes Harms placed fourth (19:22.74) and Natalie Sandeen finished fifth with a personal best (19:37.74). Ashley Jentzsch also ran a lifetime best (20:01.78).

Logan Huffman took third in the 5k (16:17.17) in his season debut. 

SOU splits attendance at two meets next weekend, sending a squad to the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco and another to the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational in McMinnville.
