ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Southern Oregon continued to impress on the big stage, boasting top-four finishes from Alyssa Johnson and Carter Stedman and an additional All-America performance from Lilly Pickett as the NAIA Outdoor Championships concluded on Friday at Karl Straus Track.
Less than 24 hours after placing third in Thursday night's 10,000-meter run, Alyssa Johnson lined back up and took home her second All-American award of the meet. The junior placed fourth in the 5,000-meter in 17 minutes 23.28 seconds, finishing less than two seconds ahead of British Columbia's (B.C.) Sarah MacGillivray and Cumberlands' (Ky.) Patrober Jepchirchir.
She improved upon an eighth-place finish from last year's 5K final (17:15.97) and became the second woman in Raider history to earn two or more All-American honors in the event. The Veneta native upped her track All-American total to four as she earned her sixth overall honor.
Immediately following Johnson's race, Stedman — who came into the meet as the No. 12-seed — placed fourth in the men's 5K in 14:27.28 to earn his first track All-American. The junior was the only competitor in the 20-person field to set a personal best.
With three laps to go, the Roseburg High graduate sat in fourth just a second behind the leader Yemane Mulugeta from Trinity Western (B.C.). A lap later, the three runners ahead of Stedman split away, leaving him to fend off Rio Grande's (Ohio) Tyler Jenkins and Corban's Jack Gladfelter. He staved off a push from Jenkins in the penultimate lap and closed in a 61.97 to secure his second overall All-American finish.
Pickett padded onto her historic freshman resume with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter final in 55.29. It was her first outdoor All-American award and came just a day after she broke SOU's 25-year-old 400-meter record in the prelims with a time of 54.78.
The Raider's time in Friday's final was the second fastest of her life. She concluded the 2026 outdoor season as the top-performing freshman in the 400 at the national meet and as the only freshman on the NAIA 400-meter top-10 list.
SOU left the meet with five total All-America medals, two of which were earned by Johnson. In the team standings, the women were 21st with 14 points and the men finished 31st with nine points. Both squads were third among Cascade Conference teams in attendance.
"It was a pretty successful meet for the Raiders," said head coach Grier Gatlin. "Every running event we had a participant in had an All-American, so that's a good sign as we move forward. The team showed a lot of resilience in dealing with the weather delays and it's also really cool that Lilly broke a 25-year-old school record."
Mason Weisgerber finished 14th in the 5K (15:04.56). The night before, the junior became the highest-placing Raider ever in the men's 10K after placing fifth.
Cumberlands won the men's title and British Columbia took home its fifth consecutive women's title.
