Humboldt holds off SOU in exhibition

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State busted open a four-point game in the second half to defeat Southern Oregon, 82-66, in a men's basketball exhibition contest Tuesday at Lumberjack Arena.

The Lumberjacks, an NCAA Division II foe, led 50-46 with 11 minutes left when Thomas Witzel scored five quick points to ignite a 13-3 run. Witzel and Austin Bryan scored 17 points apiece to lead Humboldt, which had an 18-8 advantage in offensive rebounds and shot 31-of-65 from the field.

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Raiders. Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Jacob Kaler (Camas, Wash./Camas Valley) and Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) both scored 12.

SOU, ranked 17th in the NAIA preseason poll released Tuesday, plays it first regular season games at home this weekend in the Flagship Inn Classic, hosting New Hope Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Menlo College at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
