CALIFORNIA COLLEGIATE OPEN RESULTS

SAN FRANCISCO – Southern Oregon University wrestler Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) won the Dr. Northrup Award for outstanding wrestler for his run to a 174-pound title at Saturday's California Collegiate Open, which was hosted by San Francisco State University.

SOU's Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) also won a title at 157 pounds, Tyler Cowger (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) was second at 149, Jacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka) was second at 184, Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton) was runner-up at heavyweight and Devin Poppen (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) was fourth at 133 for the second-ranked Raiders.

"We wrestled well under tough conditions in our training schedule," SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. "We won a lot of tough matches today and that's what we are looking for this time of year."

Gutches made his matches look a little less than tough while going 4-0 on the day. He had two pins and won two decisions by shutout, taking the championship by fall in 2:26 against Cal Baptist's Christian Smith.

Urrutia was stingy as well, taking a 9-5 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Spencer Hill in the first round and giving up just one point in his next three bouts. He shut out Cal Poly's Joe Granger in the 157-pound title match, 7-0, after moving on with a major decision and a decision.

Cowger went 3-1 with two decisions and a 9-1 major over Cal Baptist's Taylor Hall in the semifinals before losing 10-2 against Bakersfield's Coleman Hammond in the championship.

Abrams went on a dominant run to the 184 final with two falls, a major decision and a 5-1 victory over San Francisco State's Johnny Costa in the semis. Cal Baptist's Jake Waste topped him in the final, 3-1.

Burtis had to win twice to reach the final, doing so with consecutive decisions, and lost 3-1 to Bakersfield's Alex Encarnacion-Strand. Poppen went 2-2 on the day.

SOU is off until its senior night against Pacific in Ashland on Feb. 13 .
