FOREST GROVE
– Twenty different schools were represented Sunday at Pacific University's Mike Clock Open, and Tyler Cowger and Ryan McWatters represented the Southern Oregon University men with runner-up finishes.

Cowger did his work in the 149-pound bracket, McWatters made it to the 184-pound title match, and 174-pounder Oscar Flores was third to give the 13th-ranked Raiders three placers. Twenty-six of the 27 Raiders who competed contributed to the team point total. (Team standings were not yet available at the time this was published.)

Cowger won three straight to reach the title match: by 5-1 decision against Clackamas Community College's Angel Beltran, by fall in 1:33 against Warner Pacific's Chas Peterson, and by 4-1 decision against teammate Chandler Michael in the semifinals. Oregon State's Joey Delgado pinned him in 5:44 for the title.

McWatters also went 3-1 on the day, winning by fall (3:30) over Clackamas' Julio Fuentes and decision against Simon Fraser's Alexander Berfanger (14-7) and Simon Fraser's Morgan Smith (5-3). OSU's Corey Griego defeated him in a close final, 5-4.

Flores led the Raiders with six wins on the day, though two of them were by injury default. He pinned his first opponent, Simon Frasier's Graham Fader, in four minutes, but was then sent to the consolation bracket by Southwestern Oregon's Chase Anderson's pin. He won five straight there, first with a fall, later with a 3-2 decision against teammate Reed Tennyson, and in the third-place match by 3-2 decision against SWOCC's Tyler Webley.

Other notable performances included 141-pounder Logan Holmquist, who won three straight in the consolation with two falls. Hunter Hodges (157) lost his first match before winning four straight – three by fall and one by technical fall – to reach the consolation semis. C.J. McKinnis (165) also had a couple pins, as did Clark Woodward (174) and James McCoy (174).

Alejandro Sandoval (285) won by major decision, fall and overtime decision  to reach the semifinals of the heavyweight bracket, but injury defaulted his last two bouts.

The Raiders will compete again next Saturday at the California Challenge Duals in Redding.
