Rocky wins sixth straight, 3-2 over SOU

BILLINGS, Mont. – Rocky Mountain was tested Sunday afternoon but made the Southern Oregon men's soccer team its sixth straight victim to start the season with a 3-2 win in Cascade Conference play.

SOU's James Ramos assisted Kirk Basset for an equalizer in the 28th minute before Jack Clancy converted a penalty kick four minutes later, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead they never relinquished.

Rocky, a first-year associate member of the CCC which has appeared in the NAIA tournament the last three seasons, upped its record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Raiders went to 5-2 and 0-2, and will make their home debuts next Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m.) against Walla Walla and Multnomah.

Colin Gregory scored Rocky's first goal, assisted by Donovan Luce, in the 27th minute. The Bears made it 3-1 in the 50th when Matthew Thomas found Steven Forbes, one of 11 foreigners on the Rocky roster, for a score.

SOU's Diego Buenrostro kept the pressure on by guiding a long goal from outside the right of the box over the head of Rocky keeper Cole Catlin in the 64th minute, but it proved to be one of just two shots the Raiders would get off in the second half.

Rocky got off 15 shots to SOU's six in the game and had eight corners to SOU's five.

The contest featured six yellow cards, including four by SOU, and the Raiders were whistled for 21 of 33 fouls.

Buenrostro now has three goals this season and Bassett has two.
