No. 4 Raiders run all over College of Idaho in 42-27 win

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Southern Oregon University football team made its move Saturday afternoon a couple quarters earlier than last week, and no late heroics were necessary to complete a 42-27 defeat of College of Idaho at Simplot Stadium.

The fourth-ranked Raiders (2-1 overall, 2-1 Frontier Conference) trailed 14-7 before scoring 20 unanswered points to end the first half, assisted by Julius Rucker's two forced turnovers. Then, after the Coyotes (1-3, 1-2) got within seven points, SOU quieted over 4,800 fans for good as Louis Macklin rushed 48 yards for his first career touchdown as time expired in the third and Matt Retzlaff went 91 yards for the longest punt return TD in Raider history three minutes into the fourth.

Eight different Raiders contributed to a total of 340 rushing yards, the sixth-highest total in program history and the most since Griff Yates' NAIA record of 348 led them to 373 against Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 19, 1998 – 17 years ago to the day.

Macklin finished with 112 yards on eight carries, Melvin Mason had 92 on 17 tries, and quarterback Tanner Trosin gained 108 yards but netted 92 on 10 carrries. The Raiders rushed 51 times and averaged 6.7 per.

Trosin, making his first start, also completed 13 of 22 passes for 167 yards and a pick. He connected with Zack Davis four times for 42 yards, Keegan Lawrence twice for 57 yards and Jeremy Scottow twice for 48 yards.

Through three games, the Raiders have 10 rushing touchdowns and none through the air. Last year they had 13 passing TDs before their 10th rushing score.

Scottow's 1-yard TD run capped a 10-play, 75-yard opening drive that was then matched by a seven-minute C of I drive. Backup quarterback J.J. Hyde finished it with a 5-yard run, then ran in a 13-yard score that gave the Yotes a 14-7 lead on their next possession. Hyde, however, suffered a season-ending leg injury on his next touch.

SOU's ensuing game-tying drive was extended when Trosin hit Davis for 19 yards on a third-and-14 play, and Trosin finished the 74-yard march with a four-yard run. A Coyote three-and-out later, SOU took the lead for good on another third-down conversion – this one with 15 to go that was extended with a 41-yard pass to Lawrence.

Marcus Montano converted a 42-yard field goal attempt to put the Raiders up 17-14, and on C of I's ensuing drive Rucker forced a fumble that was recovered by Karrington Jones. SOU went 51 yards before Lawrence's goal-line TD run to make, and on C of I's very next play from scrimmage Rucker tipped Teejay Gordon's pass and finished off an interception on his back.

The pick was Rucker's first of the season and the seventh of his career.

After that, Montano made it 27-14 with 37 seconds left in the first half by drilling his fifth straight field goal to start the season, a 38-yarder.

Both teams were quiet in the third quarter until C of I's A.J. Martin rushed in to cut the lead to 27-20 with 2:25 on the clock, but Macklin immediately responded with his score.

Retzlaff – who had already run back a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD two weeks ago at Carroll – tacked on SOU's first punt return for a TD since Mike Olson's 69-yard return three years ago. That had previously been the longest ever by a Raider.

Tyson Cooper led the Raider defense with 11 tackles (six solo). Rucker had eight and Oshay Dunmore had a season-high seven, including six solo and one for a loss.

The loss was C of I's third straight this season and third straight against SOU since the rivalry was renewed after a 46-year break last year.

Gordon, who at one point was 9-for-9 passing, finished 20-for-33 with 179 yards through the air and 16 rushes for 78 yards. Zach Garzoli rushed 12 times for 80 yards, contributing to the Yotes' total of 393 yards.

SOU returns to Raider Stadium next Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against Montana State-Northern.
