Raiders stay hot with 2-0 defeat of Owls

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon ran its unbeaten streak to five games Thursday night amid an unrelenting downpour at Raider Stadium, topping off a productive homestand with a 2-0 win over Oregon Tech.

The Raiders (8-2-2 overall, 6-1-2 Cascade Conference) went up for good in the seventh minute when Ahmon Afenegus assisted Carlos Magana with a perfect pass near the left corner to a few yards in front of the goal – giving Magana plenty of space to punch in his seventh goal of the year and second go-ahead score in as many games.

One minute 26 seconds into the second half, Brett Butler made it 2-0 by converting his second penalty kick of the season when OIT keeper Dino Rozac guessed wrong.

Battling slick conditions on the artificial turf, OIT failed to generate such quality scoring chances, putting just three shots on goal.

"I'm really happy with the team from both sides," SOU head coach Biniam Afenegus said. "I'm proud of the effort on offense and defense. The guys stayed in it and played a complete 90 minutes against a really good team."

Since getting off to a 5-0 start in conference play and emerging as the surprise of the season, the Owls – who were picked to finish 11th in the CCC – have gone 0-3-1 in their last four.

SOU keeper Jonathan Morales stopped their only three shots on goal. SOU has given up one goal in its last five games and, aside from a penalty kick, Morales has made 28 saves in a row since letting one slip by.

The shutout was the Raiders' eighth of the season.

With the win, they also surpassed their 2015 conference total and moved into second place behind Rocky Mountain (5-1-1). They went 2-0-1 on the homestand and will be off until traveling next Friday and Saturday to Montana, where Carroll and Great Falls will be waiting.

SOU had advantages of 14-9 in shots and 7-4 in corner kicks.

The assist was the team-leading fifth of the season for Afenegus, who also connected with Magana last Saturday for the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute against Northwest.

The Raiders had taken the only previous meeting between the teams last year, 3-2, on Oct. 16 in Klamath Falls.
