Southern stays hot with 3-1 win over Saints

HELENA, Mont. – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team stayed hot and kept pace with the Cascade Conference's best in a 3-1 win over the Carroll Saints on Friday afternoon at Nelson Stadium.

Carlos Magana tallied two goals and teamed up with Ahmon Afenegus to assist Dakota Scott for another as the Raiders (9-2-2 overall, 7-1-2 CCC) went up 3-0 before James Lamont got the Saints (8-8, 6-5) on the board in the 64th minute.

The Raiders ran their unbeaten streak to a program-best seven games and won their third in a row. They remained in fourth place and just two points out of first as all three teams ahead of them – Rocky Mountain (8-1-1 CCC), Evergreen (7-0-3) and Corban (8-2) – were also victorious Friday.

SOU also improved to 5-0 on the road in CCC play going into its final regular-season road game at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time Saturday against Great Falls (7-6, 6-4).

Magana's goals were his seventh and eighth in conference action and gave him four in SOU's last three games. He put the Raiders up in the ninth minute with an unassisted 18-yard shot that went between Carroll keeper Bernhardt de Cino's legs.

Six minutes later, Afenegus took a corner kick that first went to Magana before finding Scott, who volleyed his shot into the back of the net.

The assists gave Afenegus six in conference action – the second-most in the CCC.

In the 58th minute, Tanner Holland directed a cross in the direction of Magana, who finished it with a header.

Jonathan Morales collected five saves for the Raiders, who were out-shot 12-10.
