Magana's goal in 89th minute lifts SOU to key victory over Eagles

ASHLAND – Entering the stretch run of its second year as an entity, the Southern Oregon's men's soccer program secured the breakthrough Cascade Conference win it's been hunting Saturday night at Raider Stadium.

In a scoreless game with 1 minute 36 seconds remaining against the Northwest (Wash.) Eagles, Ahmon Afenegus passed from the left side and found Carlos Magana cutting toward the goal. With a defender on his back, Magana gathered the pass and keeper Daniel Christenson lunged forward, clearing the way for a centered six-yard strike that skipped to the back of the net.

The Raiders' 1-0 win over the Eagles (9-3 overall, 5-2 CCC) is their first in conference play against a team with a winning record. They improved to 7-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the circuit going into next Thursday's 6 p.m. matchup with Oregon Tech.

Christenson, whose save percentage of .897 coming into the night was tops in the conference, helped the Eagles dodge a few bullets earlier in a frantic second half.

With 27 minutes left, SOU's Mitchell Pinney streaked down the field and had clear shot at Christensen, who got a few fingertips on a dart that was bound for the net. And with eight minutes left, Christenson dived to stop Jared Delaney's shot from point-blank range.

With his team-leading sixth goal of the season, though, Magana helped the Raiders avoid a fourth straight home overtime game. Their contest Friday with Evergreen State ended in a 1-1 draw.

Christenson finished with six saves, while Jonathan Morales had two in each half for the Raiders. The shutout was their seventh of the season and third in four games.

Northwest's last-ditch attempt in the final minute was a Kyle Zimmerman header that sailed just over the crossbar.

With five CCC victories, the Raiders have matched their 2015 total with five games left to play. All five will be against teams with winning conference records.
