Three Raiders earn titles at Spokane Open

SPOKANE, Wash.
Tyler Cowger, Devin Poppen and Hunter Hodges won individual titles for the Southern Oregon men's wrestling team Sunday at the Spokane Open.

The Raiders had five additional placers: Oscar Flores and Max Hane made the third-place match at 184 pounds, Louis Dix was fifth at 133, Chandler Michael was sixth at 157 and Alejandro Sandoval was sixth at 285.

Hodges, a redshirt-sophomore who is ranked third at 157 and was coming off four straight dual wins, went 5-0 on the day and started with two pins. He finished up with three straight decisions, defeating Clackamas's Ralph Tovar by 6-4 sudden victory in the quarterfinals, Clackamas's Jasiah Williams (8-2) in the semifinals and Montana State-Northern's Brandon Weber (9-5) in the first-place match.

Cowger, ranked second in the NAIA at 149 pounds, brought his season record to 11-0 with five victories, including a pair of falls. He shut out Simon Fraser's Kenji Yamashita, 4-0, in the quarterfinals, pinned North Idaho's Thomas Stevenson in 4:22 in the semis, and held on for a 3-2 win against Clackamas's Chirstopher Garcia in the finals.

Poppen, ranked 14th at 141, also went 5-0 with two pins. He took Clackamas's Jerry Mealey in a 4-0 decision ni the semifinals, pinned MSU-Northern's Clayton Carter in 6:16 in the semis, and defeated Eastern Oregon's Tyler Miller, 7-4, for the title.

Flores and Hane did not contest the 184-pound third-place match. To get there, Flores went 3-1 with three decisions and Hane went 3-1 with two technical falls and a major decision.

A backup at 133, Dix impressed with two wins by fall, two major decisions and one decision on the day. In the fifth-place match, he pinned Portland State's Tony Lucas in 20 seconds.

Michael went 4-3 with at 157, while Sandoval reached the heavyweight semifinals with two decisions and an 11-1 major decision over Fraser Valley's Brad Hildenbradt in the quarters.

The Raiders return to action on Dec. 2 with a 7 p.m. dual against San Francisco State at Ashland Middle School.
