ASHLAND – Second-ranked Tyler Cowger and third-ranked Hunter Hodges stayed perfect in dual action for Southern Oregon, but San Francisco State took six contests and defeated the Raiders 25-15 on Friday night at Ashland Middle School.

Cowger's 2-0 decision over Dylan Furtado at 149 pounds and Hodges' second-round pin of Landon Myers at 157 were SOU's only wins until Tanner Fischer (197) and Alejandro Sandoval (285) finished the night with wins that took some of the bite out of what had been a 25-9 deficit.

The sixth-ranked Raiders went to 2-3 in duals. The Gators, part of Super Region IV at the NCAA Division II level, earned their first win in five tries against their first non-Division I opponent of the season.

"We just have to take advantage of some of the matches we're in. If we do that, we win the dual," SOU head coach Mike Ritchey said. "They were better in some weights, but we left some opportunities out there."

S.F. State's Matt Gamble (125) and Nate Cervantez (133) established the tone by starting the night with a pin and a major decision. Joshua Weinberg (141) made it 13-0 with an 11-10 decision over Devin Poppen that was the result of a takedown with 15 seconds left in the third period.

Cowger stopped the bleeding when he defeated Furtado, 2-0, with a late escape and riding-time point. The victory made him 13-0 this season and was the 94th of his career, tying him for the seventh-most in SOU history.

Hodges' pin of Myers in 3:32 brought his record to 14-1. He now has three wins by fall and a technical fall in dual matches.

The Raiders had another chance to cut into the lead at 165 when Tyson Kuahine's two-point takedown of the SOU's Chandler Michael  with 50 seconds left broke a tie and made way for Kuahine's 8-6 win. At 174, James Bowers trailed 6-4 in the third and nearly tied it with a takedown that turned into a reversal and an 8-4 win for Jesse Lyga.

Fischer, ranked sixth in the NAIA at 197, worked a 7-0 victory with riding time over Mike Marshall. Sandoval trailed Ricardo Jamarillo 1-0 in the second but took the lead for good with a takedown and went on to win 7-3.

The win was the Gators' first over SOU since the 2003-04 season.

The Raiders return to action Dec. 15 with duals against Montana State-Northern and Clackamas Community College in Sweet Home.
