COMPLETE SPOKANE OPEN RESULTS

SPOKANE, Wash.
– Fourth-ranked Devin Poppen advanced to the championship match at the Spokane Open for the second year in a row Sunday, attaining runner-up status to headline Southern Oregon University's day at the men's tournament.

Chandler Michael (157 pounds) and Tanner Fischer (197) both placed third for the Raiders. Alejandro Sandoval (197) was fifth and Andrew Ramirez (149) sixth.

At 141, Poppen started his outing with three straight bonus-point victories: He pinned Eastern Oregon's Clay Johnson in 1:36 and Western Washington's Garin Swanson-Dinsmore in 37 seconds, then won by 17-8 major decision over Clackamas Community College's Clai Quintanilla in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Poppen scored a 7-3 win against Montana State-Northern's Matt Weber – the seventh-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 141 – before dropping the final to Eastern Oregon's AJ Rockwell in an 8-6 sudden victory.

Michael went 5-1 on the day, and his only loss was to top-ranked Brandon Weber of MSU-Northern in a 3-0 semifinal decision. He pinned his first two opponents, Western Washington's Devin Doneen (1:27) and North Idaho's Cooper McCullough (4:13), and stayed in the championship bracket with an 8-5 defeat of Highline's Liam Corbett. In the consolation bracket he topped McCullough again, 7-4, and won the third-place match with a 10-4 decision against Providence's Josh Beckler.

Fischer, ranked No. 4 at 197, was also mostly dominant with three pins and a major decision on a 4-1 day. He started with wins by falls against North Idaho's Christian Grover (2:50) and Umpqua Community College's Brayden Schultz (5:00) before a 6-3 loss to Simon Fraser's Morgan Smith in the semifinals. He defeated Southwestern Oregon's Wyatt Westfall by 10-1 major decision in the consolation semis, then pinned Providence's seventh-ranked John Hensley in 3:37 for third place.

Sandoval, after dropping his first match, won four of his next five by decision, including a 3-1 victory against Westfall in the fifth-place match. Ramirez reached the semis with a pair of decisions, and following a loss by sudden victory in the semis he sat the rest of the tourney with an injury.

SOU will be off until Dec. 2 at San Francisco State, where it'll work on a 1-1 dual record.
