SOU goes 2-1 on final day at So Cal Classic

WEST COVINA, Calif. Rebecca Velasquez had six RBI on three extra-base hits and capped the day with a three-run home run as Southern Oregon wrapped up its stay at the NAIA So. Cal Classic with two wins in three games Thursday.

The Raiders (10-2 overall) started the day with by giving up a five-run lead in a 6-5 loss to host Biola (Calif.), but turned around to defeat 25th-ranked San Diego Christian, 4-2, and Arizona Christian, 5-1. They won five of the six at the tournament and will be off until Feb. 25 at Concordia's Cavalier Classic in Portland.

Gabby Sandoval (7-1) pitched complete games in the opener and the night cap, and Karlee Coughlin (3-0) went the distance in the upset of SDC. Harlee Donovan also had four hits on the day, including a double and a homer with four RBI and three runs scored, and Taylor Martinez went 3-for-8 with her second homer of the Classic.

Game 1: Biola 6, SOU 5
The Raiders' six-game winning streak was snapped in unlikely fashion as the Eagles (7-4-2), down 5-0, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the seventh for a walk-off win.

After five quiet innings against Sandoval, the Eagles loaded the bases with three straight hits to start the sixth. Jay Perez knocked in their first run with a single, and Kayla Neff sent a two-run double down the line in left field. In the seventh, they loaded the bases again with three singles and Perez's walk played the first run. A fielder's choice tied it, and with two down Perez sent the game-winning double to right.

Donovan's first homer of the year was a two-run shot that put the Raiders up 2-0 in the first. Aaliyah Oliver's RBI single made it 4-0 in the fourth, and Martinez's solo shot to right capped SOU's scoring in the sixth. Oliver and Kayleen Smith had two hits apiece in the game.

Game 2: SOU 4, San Diego Christian 2
Coughlin gave up a solo homer to Jordan Neal in the second and an RBI double to Shelbianne Evans in the third, but she was nearly flawless after that in picking up her second complete-game win in as many days. The freshman allowed five hits – only two over the final four innings – walked two and struck out one to improve to 3-0.

After falling behind, the Raider lineup got going, too. In the third, Tyler Burke's singled and Kelsey Randall reached on an error, and Smith's squeeze bunt brought Burke home. And in the fourth, Rebecca Velasquez led off with a double and Nicole Cardoza later grounded out to plate the tying run.

Donovan's double to right drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth after Burke and Smith set the table with singles, and Velasquez's fielder's choice RBI made it 4-2. Burke and Smith both went 2-for-3.

Game 3: SOU 5, Arizona Christian 1
Sandoval conceded a hit and a run in the first inning but just one hit thereafter in her fifth complete game of the season. She struck out six – including the side in the third – and walked two.

Donovan and Martinez both went 2-for-3, and Donovan scored twice. In the third, her single scored Burke to tie the game. The Raiders went ahead 2-1 in the third when Velasquez reached on a throwing error that scored Donovan, and Velasquez went deep to plate Donovan and Randall (who had doubled) in the fifth.

The Raiders had seven hits, bringing their total to 22 for the day.
