SOU takes 2 of 3 from Menlo on opening day

FREMONT, Calif. – Promising debuts from two freshman pitchers and 26 hits produced by the lineup Saturday helped Southern Oregon take a three-game set from Menlo (Calif.) on opening day for the Raiders at Ohlone College Field.

SOU won the first two against the Oaks, 3-2 and 10-2, as Gabby Sandoval and Karlee Coughlin earned complete-game victories and Kayleen Smith stroked two hits in each. Menlo (3-2 overall) claimed the finale, 4-2, behind a Victoria Cervantes complete game in which she didn't allow an earned run.

The Raiders were originally scheduled to play two Saturday against William Jessup and two more Sunday against Menlo, but the schedule was adjusted and the Sunday were scrapped due to unplayable field conditions. SOU will be back in action next Friday at sixth-ranked Simpson (Calif.).

Game 1: SOU 3, Menlo 2
Sandoval, a freshman in Anaheim, Calif., was shaky in the first inning – issuing three walks that led to one earned run and another unearned – but settled down in a hurry. She got through the next six frames unscathed, finishing with four strikeouts, four hits and six walks on her line.

The Raiders didn't make their move until the fifth inning, when Coughlin led off with a double and Abigail Lund knocked her in with a single. Aaliyah Oliver and Smith set the table with back-to-back singles to start the sixth inning; Smith then stole second and Oliver scored on an errant throw on the play to tie the game, and one batter later Harlee Donovan's steal prompted another error that brought in Smith for the go-ahead run.

Sandoval stranded an Oaks runner at third in the sixth and left another baserunner hanging in the seventh to finish it off.

Game 2: SOU 10, Menlo 2
The Raiders triggered the mercy rule to finish off the Oaks in six innings in Game 2, backing Coughlin with 14 hits. For her part, Coughlin struck out five, walked one and allowed six hits, and through the first five innings she blanked the Oaks while scattering three hits.

At the plate, Taylor Martinez put the Raiders ahead with an RBI groundout in the first inning and in the fourth powered their first home run of the season, a solo job. Coughlin and Smith added run-scoring doubles in the three run fourth. And, in a four-run fifth, Tiana Brown, Paige Leeper and Kacie Hurlimann each provided RBI singles.

Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Brown and Martinez also had two hits apiece.

Game 3: Menlo 4, SOU 2
Cervantes slowed down the SOU lineup in the capper, holding the Raiders scoreless until the seventh inning. She issued four free passes, scattered seven hits and only struck out two, but she induced 10 groundouts on the afternoon. Kelsey Randall and Hannah Wessel both had two hits for the Raiders.

For the Oaks, Sarah Reyes launched a solo homer in the third that made it 2-0 and padded the lead in the fifth with an RBI triple. She went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and was a single short of the cycle. Lacie Crawford took the loss but struck out four, walked one and conceded just two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
