Smith's clutch hit gives SOU ninth straight win, 2-1 over Eagles

KIRLAND, Wash.
Kayleen Smith hit a two-out double in the top of the seventh inning, bringing in Aaliyah Oliver for the winning run as Southern Oregon topped Northwest 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Cedar Park to complete a three-game series sweep.

The Raiders (21-4 overall, 8-1 Cascade Conference) have won nine in a row, their longest win streak since the 2005 season. They were originally scheduled to play a second (nonleague) game Sunday against the Eagles (6-13, 2-7), but it was scrapped because the field they were originally slated to use was unplayable.

SOU freshman Karlee Coughlin pitched all seven frames with six strikeouts, four hits and one walk on her line to improve to 7-0.

The Raiders, too, had four hits heading into the seventh, which Oliver led off with a walk. When Kelsey Randall lined out for the second out, Northwest attempted to double off Oliver, but a misplay allowed her to advance to second. Smith, who went 2-for-4, followed with a double down the third-base line.

Randall extended her hitting streak to 10 games when she started the game with a single and went to second on an error. The error proved costly: Smith followed with an RBI infield single for the first run. Both runs allowed by Eagles starter Rachel Hawley, who also went the distance, were unearned.

The Eagles tied it in the second on Courtney Heard's double to left field before the teams went quiet.

Smith picked up her team-leading 19th steal of the season and finished the series 6-for-11 at the plate with four RBI and four runs.

The Raiders committed one error, just the third in their last six games.

The Raiders return home for doubleheaders next Friday and Saturday against British Columbia at University Field.
