Coughlin, Sandoval sharp again as SOU takes two from Saints

HELENA, Mont. – Southern Oregon's freshman one-two pitching punch came through again Friday as the 18th-ranked Raiders started their series against the Carroll Saints with 6-2 and 5-1 victories at Centennial Park.

While Gabby Sandoval improved to 13-5 and Karlee Coughlin stayed perfect at 12-0 in the circle, Harlee Donovan tied SOU's single-season home run record with her 11th, a solo shot in the sixth inning of Game 2 that Tyler Burke turned into a back-to-back display with her second of the year.

The Raiders (34-9 overall, 18-5 Cascade Conference) now have a two-game cushion in second place but remain two games back of first-place Corban, which swept Eastern Oregon on Friday.

They needed more clutch at-bats in Game 1 to keep pace, scoring all six of their runs in the seventh inning. Trailing 1-0, they loaded the bases with no outs as walks issued to Taylor Martinez and Rebecca Velasquez sandwiched a Coughlin single. Abigail Lund then came through with a two-run single to the opposite field. With one out, Kelsey Randall made it 3-1 with an RBI single and the next batter Kayleen Smith, hit a two-run triple to right.

Donovan's RBI groundout capped the scoring. The Raiders only had two hits against Carroll pitcher Tess Eaton before recording five in the frame.

Sandoval allowed six hits, struck out five and walked one. It was the fifth time this season she's pitched seven innings and allowed two or fewer runs. It was also the third time the Raiders have come back to win when they've trailed going into the seventh inning. Last year, they didn't do it once.

SOU went ahead in the fourth inning of Game 2, when Coughlin's single to center scored Skyler Matthews and broke a 1-1 tie. Donovan and Burke went deep in the sixth – Donovan's now done so eight times in SOU's last eight games – and Kelsey Randall capped a three-hit game with an RBI double that drove in Lund in the seventh.

Coughlin allowed six hits, walked three and struck out two. She lowered her ERA to 2.02 in her ninth complete game of the season.

The Raiders and Saints (12-17, 8-12) will play two more starting at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on Saturday.
